Why Maintenance Matters for Natural Stone Tiles

The porosity of natural stone tiles is one of the major reasons why natural stone tiles require regular maintenance. By porosity, we mean that these tiles can absorb water and spills more easily than other tiles like Porcelain tiles. Due to their porous nature, natural stone tiles are more prone to discolouration and damage.

Here are some other reasons why maintenance is so important for natural stone tiles:

    • The unique patterns, textures and appearance of natural stone tiles can look dim when they are dirty, damaged or discoloured. The most appealing aspect of natural stone tiles is their visual appeal. Regular maintenance is the only way to preserve the beauty of these tiles.
    • Most natural stone tiles are quite pricey. You want to maintain and protect these tiles so that they can last for decades easily.
    • Natural stone with neglected grout lines or unsealed surfaces can harbour bacteria, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. Regular cleaning and sealing ensure a cleaner, more hygienic environment.
    • Well maintained natural stone tiles add elegance and sophistication to your home, increasing its aesthetic and market value.

Regular Care of Natural Stone Tiles

Here are a few dos and don’ts that you can follow in order to clean and maintain your natural stone tiles on a regular basis.

    • Sweep or dust your floor tiles everyday (if possible) or at least on a regular basis with a soft bristle broom or a microfiber dust mop. You can also consider using the brush attachment of vacuum cleaners.

    • If there are any spills, dust or dirt, mop as soon as possible with a damp mop or soft cloth. You need to make sure the cloth or mop you are using is clean so that the mop’s grime does not spread on your tiles.

    • Don’t allow water to sit on your tiles as moisture can cause mould growth or water spots if not addressed promptly. Even when you use damp clothes to mop the tiles, use dry towel afterwards.

    • Never use harsh or acidic cleaners. Use the PH-neutral ones instead.

    • Use a soft brush (not wire) and a grout cleaner safe for natural stone to clean your grout lines.

    • Don’t use a lot of water to clean these tiles.

    • Excessive scrubbing can cause scratches and dents. Avoid tools that are harsh and abrasive.

Deep Cleaning of Natural Stone Tiles

Let’s go through the step by step process you can follow to deep clean your natural stone tiles every now and then.

    Step 1:
    Gather all your supplies

To make things easy for you, start by gathering everything you will need.

Cleaning tools might depend on your personal preferences too, but here are some general tools that are mostly required:

    • pH-neutral stone cleaner (specifically formulated for natural stone)

    • Soft bristle brush or nylon scrub brush

    • Non abrasive sponges or microfiber cloths

    • Mop or bucket

    • Soft towels for drying

    • Clean water

Remember to never use acidic cleaners containing lemon or vinegar, harsh chemicals like bleach or ammonia and abrasive scrubbers or steel wool.

Before using any cleaner, we recommend you test it in a small and hidden area before using it all over.

    Step 2:
    Prepare the surface
Sweep or vacuum to remove any dirt, debris or dust. Start with a smooth slate. When cleaning wall tiles, you could cover cabinets and painted walls with a plastic cover.

    Step 3:
Apply a cleaner specifically made for natural stone tiles. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to mix the cleaner with water if required. You should apply the solution evenly all over your tiles. Please ensure the surface is damp but not too absorbed with moisture.

    Step 4:
Gently scrub grout lines, corners and areas with grime with a soft bristle brush.

    Step 5:
Mop or wipe the surface with clean, warm water.

    Step 6:
Dry the surface with a clean and dry towel. You can also open your windows to speed up your drying process.

    Step 7:
Reseal the tiles after deep cleaning. Apply a high quality stone sealer evenly across the tiles, let it dry and buff to a shine if needed. Always follow the sealer manufacturer’s instructions.

By following all these steps every 3 to 6 months or as required, you can maintain the charm and beauty of your natural stone tiles for a long time.

Please remember to use the right tools that are well suited for natural stone tiles while you are cleaning.
