Tools You will need to remove Tiles from a Wall

Removing tiles from a wall is a delicate and sensitive process that requires cautious approach and preparations in advance to avoid damaging the tiles and your wall.

Every DIY tiling project requires a set of tools to make your work easier, efficient and more importantly safe from every perspective.

Hence, before you start the process make sure that you have all these tools and items in your arsenal for the DIY project that you are about to embark upon.

Here are the tools/items that you will need:

  • Safety glasses & proper gloves

  • Drop sheets or plastic sheeting

  • Hammer

  • Cold chisel or tile removal tool

  • Utility knife

  • Paint scraper tool or putty knife

  • Bucket and sponge (for cleaning)

  • Optional: Oscillating multi-tool or heat gun (for tough glue)

Great, now that you know what you will need to start removing tiles from the wall, it’s time to get started with the process.

If you are doing this for the first time, make sure that you follow all these steps meticulously or do it under the supervision of an experienced family member:

Step-by-Step Guide to Remove Tiles from the Wall

Step 1. Prepare the area for tile removal

Removing wall tiles can be a messy process that can leave unwanted stains, dirt and dust. Hence, cover the vulnerable space with dop sheets or plastic.

Make sure that you are properly geared up with necessary safety equipment to avoid any health related mishap or problem.

Step 2. Mark the Grout Lines

Next up, you need to start marking the grout lines. You can use a utility knife to slowly cut through the grout around the lines.

This step helps to loosen the tiles and protect the surrounding tiles from cracking.

Step 3. Remove the First Tile from the Wall

Start removing the first tile from the wall. You can begin from the loose tile or the broken tile that you want to replace. If you find this, your task will get much easier.

If not, you can place a chisel at the edge of a tile and tap gently with a hammer to extract it from the wall.

Step 4. Continue removing other Tiles

Remove all the tiles carefully and try removing them one by one to avoid damaging the wall and the tiles.

Continue this process cautiously until you finish with all the tiles.

Step 5. Remove Any Adhesive Left Behind

Once you finish removing the tiles, you may face a scenario where you are left with a wall with remaining adhesive or glue. If the adhesive is stubborn, you can use a heat gun to remove all the unwanted substance.

A clean surface is important to add the tiles later on so make sure that you get the adhesive removed.

You can use a paint scraper, chisel, or oscillating multi-tool to carefully remove the leftover tile glue.

Step 6. Clean the Wall

The final step is to clean the wall with a damp sponge to remove the remaining debris, dirt and dust. This step is pertinent to ensure that you have a good surface ready before the re-tiling process.

With these steps you can professionally and properly remove the tiles from a wall.

5. Use the Ideal Lighting

If you compare designing a tiny bathroom space to cooking that perfect dish, good lighting would be equivalent to adding that secret sauce to create a succulent dish.

Lighting is often an underrated factor in designing bathrooms but if you get this right, you will have conquered bathroom designing and styling.

The first tip, try to get as much natural light as possible. For the artificial lighting, choose low-profile lights like strip lighting under vanity, downlights and layered lights.
