When selecting the right tiles for your bathroom, it’s also essential that you think about the equation you want to create between your bathroom wall tiles and floor tiles.

Whether you want a clean look, a unique aesthetic or a dramatic visual appeal, the way you mix and match your floor and wall tiles can make all the difference.

To make things easy for all homeowners, we have compiled some of the ways you can combine bathroom tiles to create different types of results.

    Same Tile All the Way

One of the easiest and simplest ways to put up your bathroom and floor tiles is by using the same tile in the same colour all over your bathroom.

While this might sound monotonous and boring at first, if you can select the right tiles, even one single tile throughout can look stunning.

Tiles like Marble or Porcelains resembling marble can give you a luxurious and sophisticated visual appeal. Tiles like Terrazzo can bring in that playful, fun and vibrant feel. If you use light colours like white in this regard, you can also make your bathroom look more airy, spacious and bright.

    Complementing Colours

Using colours of the same colour palette but of different shades or tones can be an amazing way to style your bathroom wall and floor tiles. This type of arrangement can create a seamless, harmonious look without overwhelming the space.

Different shades of grey, blue, green, beige or brown are most commonly seen in bathrooms today. If you want, you can even mix colours like beige and grey or brown and white to create a contrast without the risk of colours clashing or looking out of place.

    Bold Contrasts

This is for everyone who loves creating spaces with a lot of personality and character. For anyone who loves a bit of drama, bold contrasts are the thing to go for.

Choose contrasting colours that don’t overpower each other but complement each other instead for this style.

Some of the colour combinations that you can go for are:

    • The classic black and white
    • Navy blue and white
    • Grey and yellow
    • Teal and beige
    • Dark green and white
    • Brown and cream
    • Blush pink and grey
    • Black and gold
    • White and aqua
    • Turquoise and sand
    • Grey and mustard

    Mix Large and Small Tiles

There are many different ways to go about this.

Mixing large and small tiles can be so much fun and here are some ideas to do so:

    • Use small tiles to create a focal area, like a feature wall, shower niche or backsplash, while keeping large tiles for the rest of the space.

    • Add a strip of small tiles as a border or accent line within large tiled areas.

    • Cover most walls or floors with large format tiles to make the room feel bigger, then use small tiles to add detail and charm in select areas.

    Create Zones with Tiles

    This is a great one.

You can use your tiles to separate your shower space, your handwashing station and your other areas. Either you can go with contrasting colours or different patterns that don’t overpower each other to achieve this. Perhaps you can use mosaics tiles in the shower area, large format tiles for the floor and subway tiles for the main walls. We recommend you consult an interior designer, your tile supplier or look up inspirations online to get the look that would appeal to you the most.

When you create zones with tiles, you can make a wonderfully structured and organised bathroom.

Things NOT TO DO While Mixing and Matching Bathroom Wall and Floor Tiles

Mixing and matching tiles depends a lot on your personal preferences, aesthetic taste and decor choices. However, there are certain things we highly recommend you stay away from.

    Don’t use too many patterns

Using a lot of patterns can make your space look cluttered and overwhelming. Even if you are using just two patterns, make sure both are not equally loud and dramatic.

    Don’t choose clashing colours

Whether you use complementing colours or contrasting ones, use colours that at least blend together well and look good in a single space. Refer to colour wheels to pick up cohesive shades.

Be mindful about grout lines and colours

Inconsistent grout colours or excessive grout lines can ruin the look of your tiles.Use grout colours that match or complement the tiles to maintain a clean, polished appearance.

    Don’t combine too many textures

Combining too many textures (e.g., glossy, matte, rough, metallic) can make the bathroom feel visually cluttered. Limit the design to two or three finishes for a balanced look.

    Don’t ignore functionality

We all want stunning bathrooms for our homes. However, functionality and practicality can not be avoided for the sake of visual appeal. Especially in areas like bathrooms, functionality needs to be just as well considered as the aesthetics.

You can’t use glossy tiles in bathroom floors as it raises the risk of slips, accidents and injuries. Use slip resistant tiles for floors, especially in wet areas like showers.
