Porcelain Floor Tiles: Honest Advice Before You Buy

Working out which porcelain floor tiles to choose can be daunting with so many finishes, sizes and technical terms.

This guide focuses on what actually counts so that homeowners can confidently choose tiles that suit them best in Sydney’s climate.

Porcelain vs Other Flooring: Why Porcelain Wins for Sydney Homes

Comparison chart showing porcelain tiles outperforming ceramic, vinyl flooring and natural stone in durability, maintenance and suitability for Sydney homes

Porcelain vs Ceramic:

Ceramic tiles are less expensive compared to porcelain; however, they will be more prone to cracking in high-traffic areas such as the kitchen and around island benches. The softer composition and higher rate of water absorption, therefore, make ceramic tiles less durable over time.

Firing at higher temperatures makes the porcelain tiles denser and stronger. This results in much more water-resistant tiles, which are ideal for busy Australian homes.

Porcelain vs. Natural Stone:

We love the look of Natural Stone Tiles. Genuinely beautiful. But sealing it every year? Panicking over wine spills? Porcelain gives you marble or travertine looks without that anxiety.

Porcelain vs. Vinyl:

Vinyl works well when the budget is tight and it’s quick and easy to install. The downside is that it doesn’t stay looking new for long. Scratches from moving furniture, fading in sunny spots and a dull surface are all common after a couple of years.

Porcelain tiles hold up much better. They keep their colour, resist wear and handle daily foot traffic without losing their finish, making them a more reliable choice for long-term flooring.

Porcelain Tile Installation Costs Sydney: What to Actually Budget

Here’s where most people  get shocked. The tiles are just the starting point.

What’s Included in Total Costs

Tile costs vary widely:

  • Budget-friendly options for cost-conscious renovators.

  • Mid-range quality for most residential projects.

  • Premium imported ranges for luxury installations.

Installation and preparation costs include:

  • Professional labour for laying tiles.

  • Removing old tiles and flooring.

  • Substrate preparation and levelling.

  • Waterproofing for wet areas (bathrooms, laundries).

  • Grout, adhesive, and sealants.

  • Trim pieces and movement joints.

  • Waste disposal.

DIY vs Professional Tile Installation Sydney

Why DIY Tile Installation Is Harder Than It Looks

Most DIY issues start with the same problem: the floor isn’t level.

What you actually need for DIY:

  • Levelling compound for dips and bumps.

  • Self-levelling underlayment.

  • Laser level (not eyeballing it, trust me).

  • Proper tile spacers.

  • The right adhesive for your specific tiles.

  • Quality wet saw for cutting.

The Real Budget Reality

We once had a customer who budgeted for her bathroom floor and the tile price seemed reasonable. But after speaking with her installer and adding in the real world costs: waterproofing, fixing the uneven substrate, removing the old tiles and properly preparing the floor, the final cost was almost double.

At first, she was understandably concerned. Once she saw the damaged floor underneath and her installer explained to her why each step was necessary, she grasped why extra work was needed.

Expert Tips for Buying Porcelain Tiles in Sydney

Before You Buy

Get samples first:

  • Take them home for at least a week.

  • See them in your actual lighting.

  • Check how they look at different times of day.

  • That dark tile looks completely different in your north-facing room versus our showroom.

Consider grout colour carefully:

  • Light grout shows every bit of dirt (learned this the hard way in my entryway).

  • Dark grout hides dirt better but shows scratches and chips more.

  • Medium grey is often the sweet spot.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How to choose a good porcelain tile?

Figure out where you're putting it. Busy areas need stronger tiles. Check if it absorbs water - less is better. Don't get glossy ones for wet floors. And yeah, make sure you like how it looks.

2. How to tell if porcelain tile is good quality?

Hold it - feels heavy? Good sign. Tap it with your knuckle. Quality tiles make a sharp ring. Break one if you can - the colour should go through the whole thing. Check the edges aren't wonky.

3. What is the 1 3 rule for tiles?

When laying tiles in a brick style, shift each row by a third instead of half. Looks way more natural. Avoids that annoying vertical line thing.

4. What is grade 4 porcelain tile?

Heavy-duty stuff. For places that get walked on a lot. Your kitchen, hallways, shops and restaurants. Tougher than the basic ones but not industrial strength.
