Surface, Story, Soul:
Tania Saba on Tiles, Design & the Art of the Timeless Interior

Tania Saba interior designer sharing tile style ideas in a modern luxury Sydney interior for Royal Tiles expert design guide.

With Tania Saba, you have a person who knows how to discuss tiles in a manner that will make you think twice about every floor that you’ve stepped foot on.

She is a interior designer at Royal Tiles and has, after many years helping Sydneysiders in selecting tiles which will last for the long haul, developed her own ideas regarding the trends for 2026 and beyond.

1. Every interior designer has a moment, a room, a space, a feeling - that makes them think "this is what I want to do with my life." What was yours and when you arrived at Royal Tiles, how did tiles fit into the way you already saw interior design?

Every interior designer has that moment, where a space stops being just functional and starts telling a story. For me, it was realising that the most inspiring spaces aren’t the ones that follow the rules, but the ones that challenge them. The ones that make you pause, look twice and feel something unexpected.

I’ve always been drawn to out of the box thinking and pushing beyond what a space is “supposed” to be. It’s about reimagining how materials are used, playing with scale, contrast and texture in ways people don’t expect. Turning something simple into a statement. Letting a surface become art. Creating movement where there was none.

When I came into Royal Tiles, that mindset only grew stronger. Tiles became more than a finish, they became a medium for creativity. Instead of placing them in the conventional way, I started to see endless possibilities. Wrapping them across surfaces, blending indoor and outdoor spaces seamlessly, using bold patterns to create rhythm, or soft, tonal layers to evoke calm.

It’s that willingness to think differently that transforms a space. To not just design what’s safe or expected, but to create something that inspires something people remember. Because at the end of the day, great design isn’t just about how a space looks, it’s about how it makes you feel and the story it leaves behind.

2. Describe your perfect room. Not a client's brief, not a trend report — yours. No budget, no compromises. What does it feel like to walk into and what's on the floor?

I don’t see the floor as something you simply walk on. I see it as art, canvas, a moment. In my perfect space, the floor holds a statement, whether it’s a handcrafted mosaic, a bold stone composition, or an unexpected pattern that moves through the room like a story unfolding beneath your feet. It draws you in without shouting, grounding the entire space while still being expressive.

3. When you walk through the Royal Tiles showroom right now, which range or tile immediately catches your eye as the one most Sydney homeowners are going to fall in love with this year and why?

My eyes are always first drawn to the DW range of tiles and mosaic selections. I love how versatile they are and can work across all types of homes while still feeling timeless.

What really stands out to me is the texture and depth they bring. They allow you to introduce artistry into a space in a subtle, elevated way, without it feeling like a typical or predictable tile choice.

4. Japandi, boho chic, modern contemporary, Art Deco Sydney homeowners are being pulled in completely different directions right now. Which of these styles are you actually seeing dominate in 2026 and how do tile choices either make or break each one?

In 2026, I'm seeing Japandi and modern contemporary lead the way in Sydney, with Art Deco showing up in smaller feature moments like powder rooms and bars.

But it's not really about choosing one style anymore, it's about balance and restraint. Tiles are what anchor that balance. They either quietly support the space or completely overpower it.

The homes that feel most elevated are the ones where tiles aren't chosen to match a style - they're chosen to translate a feeling across the entire space.

5. What are the defining tile trends in Sydney right now for 2026?

Sydney homes are moving away from cool, sterile palettes and leaning into warmth, think clay, sand, limestone and soft beige tones.

These colours feel more grounded, timeless and emotionally calming.

6.What are your top 4 tips for anyone buying tiles for the first time?

Always look at the tile in natural light.

Don’t choose tiles in isolation.

Be intentional with scale and layout.

Treat your floor like art, not an afterthought.

7. What's the worst tile mistake you see Sydney homeowners make repeatedly and what's the fix?

The biggest mistake is choosing tiles without considering the full space - lighting, layout and other finishes. The fix: plan holistically.

View samples in your space, consider scale and texture and make sure the tile works with everything else, not on its own.

8. If someone is renovating right now and wants their home to still look incredible in 10 years, what's your single most important piece of tile advice?

If it relies on a current look or colour that’s everywhere right now, it will date. Instead, invest in natural tones, subtle texture and quality materials that age well over time. If it still feels calm, balanced and effortless to you, it will still look incredible in years to come.

9. What's one tile trend you're genuinely excited about this year — something that makes you stop a customer and say "you have to see this"

Textured, handcrafted mosaic patterns.

10. What does a beautifully tiled space make you feel that no other design element can replicate?

A beautifully tiled space gives a sense of grounded emotion. Unlike furniture or styling, tiles are permanent - they're built into the space. You don’t just see them, you live on them, walk across them, feel them.
