Porcelain Vs Ceramic Tiles: Which is Better?

    porcelain vs ceramic tiles
    Peter Yusuf - September 20, 2024

Porcelain and Ceramic are two of the most popular and affordable tiles in the market. These tiles are quite common in the Australian household and are often considered the same. However, even though there are many similarities between the tiles, there are also quite a few differences that distinguish them.

Key Differences Between Ceramic and Porcelain Tiles

    Basis of Comparison
    Porcelain Tiles
    Ceramic Tiles
    Composition
Made from denser, finer clay and fired at higher temperatures
Compared to porcelain, ceramic tiles are made from less dense and coarser clay and are fired at a slightly lower temperature
    Durability
Porcelain is denser and harder than ceramic, making it more durable
Though ceramic is stronger and more durable than most tiles, it can be slightly less durable than porcelain
    Water Absorption Rate
They are highly moisture resistant, with a water absorption rate of less than 0.5%
Their water absorption rate is 3%
    Cost
The tile and the installation both cost slightly more
They are more affordable. Ceramic is actually one of the most cost-friendly tiles in the market
    Ease of Installation
Installing Porcelain tiles might require additional tools and expertise
Ceramic is easier to install and can be taken on as a DIY project
    Maintenance and Cleaning
Easier to clean and maintain due to their non-porous and dense surface
Might require a little more frequency and effort when it comes to cleaning
    Design
Can offer the look of premium tiles
    Available in more versatile designs
    Weight
Heavier and more difficult to work with during transportation and installation
Lightweight tiles that make the installation process quite smooth

Where Can You Use Porcelain Tiles?

Porcelain Tiles because of their durability, high level of water resistance and denser composition can be used in both outdoor and indoor areas. You can use these tiles in higher traffic areas or floors where there can be chances of more damage.

Where Can You Use Ceramic Tiles?

We recommend using ceramics mostly for indoor areas and places with moderate foot traffic. You can use ceramic on floors as well but perhaps not in areas with high traffic. Ceramic is an excellent option for backsplashes and walls.

    Final Verdict: Which is Better?

In the debate of Porcelain vs. Ceramic, there is no one right answer. Porcelain is more durable, offers better water resistance, is less prone to damage and can even replicate the looks of premium tiles like natural stone tiles. Ceramic on the other hand is a breeze when it comes to installation, is easier on the wallet and offers a wide variety of vibrant and intricate designs. The right type of tile for you is the one that complements your preferences, budget, decor and needs.

Best Tile Colours for Home Decor

tile colours for home decor banner image
    Peter Yusuf - September 18, 2024

Selecting the right tile colour is a significant home decor decision. Whether you want to create a calm sanctuary or a vibrant ambience, tile colours can make all the difference.

Colours can even affect your mood. So not all colours can be used in all spaces. For instance, a bright shade of yellow can work for kitchens that always have a constant buzz. However, for the bedroom, you must choose more calming and relaxing colours like pink or blue.

Things to Consider Before Choosing Tile Colours

Before you go on the adventure of browsing through the possible colours, here are a few things you might want to consider!

    Lighting Conditions

A room with plenty of natural light can handle darker, more intense tile colours, while a dimly lit room will benefit from lighter, reflective tiles that help brighten the space. The type of lighting you use (warm or cool tones) can also impact how tile colours appear. Make sure to view tile samples under the specific lighting in the room to get a true sense of the colour.

Size and Nature of the Room

Lighter tiles create a sense of openness and can make a small room appear bigger, while darker colours can make larger spaces feel cozier. If you aim to visually enlarge a space, lighter, neutral tones are your best bet.

Also, what kind of vibe do you want your room to radiate? You want your colours to complement that. A bedroom is a space that requires a lot of calm and relaxing energy, so you might want to go with colours like blue, beige, ivory or grey. If you want to create a fun bathroom, you could opt for the brighter colours. But if you want your bathroom to feel like a spa, you can go for more earthy tile colours.

    Current Interior Design

This is an incredibly important aspect to consider before selecting a tile colour. The colour you choose for your tiles needs to complement or suitably contrast with the current colour palette of your furniture, cabinetry and countertops. If the current decor is dark and modern, you can use neutral colours to make the whole place more balanced. In places that are calm and simplistic, you can use tiles with striking colours to create an attractive contrast.

    Maintenance Involved

In high-traffic areas like hallways, kitchens and even living rooms, it can be quite tricky to use lighter colours. Colours like white and beige show stains quite easily and hence might require constant cleaning. For places that see constant foot traffic, you can go for darker or more earthy colours to avoid putting a lot of effort into regular maintenance.

Benefits of Using Lighter Coloured Tiles

    lighter coloured tiles
    • Can make a room appear more airy, open and fresh.

    • Most light and neutral coloured tiles can complement most types of furniture and decorating styles.

    • Great for people who love a minimalist look.

    • Have the ability to make a room look more spacious.

    • Can help brighten the darker areas of your home.

    • Have a class, timeless appeal that doesn’t go out of fashion; hence are great for long term use.

    • Might even keep a place cooler in hot climates.

Benefits of Using Darker Coloured Tiles

    lighter coloured tiles
    • Exudes a sense of sophistication and elegance.

    • Darker tiles in deep blue, charcoal or dark brown radiate comfort and warmth.

    • Better at hiding dirt, stains and marks.

    • Can add depth to rooms, making them look more defined and structured.

    • Ideal for rooms where you want relaxed and comfortable ambience.

    The Best Tile Colour Combinations

There are a ton of tile colour combinations that can look gorgeous in a home. In this list, we have selected some of our absolute favorites

    Green and Beige

Green is the colour of trees and beige is the colour of sand. Together, they create an oasis of nature. When you put these two colours together in your kitchen, living room, shower space or bathroom, you can create an elegant and calm atmosphere in your space.

We suggest you use green for your walls and beige for the floor area. This combination will surely provide a unique and relaxing touch to your interiors.

    Classic Black and White

You can never go wrong with a little monochromatic magic. The classic colours black and white have been here forever but are still a trend. The contrast between the two colours creates a striking effect that adds dimension and depth to any space. These colours together also beautifully portray simplicity and minimalism while providing a clean and uncluttered aesthetic. Marbles or subways are two great choices for this colour combination.

Black and white is also a safe choice if you aren’t too sure about which colour combination you might like the most.

    Different Shades of Brown

Brown symbolizes earthiness, warmth and comfort. And while brown might not be an easy colour to pair other colours with, different shades of brown can look stunning together. Check out Timber Look Tiles or Sandstone Tiles if you think you would love the colour combination.

    Maroon and Ivory

This colour combination is most suitable for bathroom spaces. And though the deep tone of maroon doesn’t allow for a lot of brightness, the regal look that the colour can provide with the subtle hues of ivory can offer immense elegance.

How to Shop and Style Herringbone Tiles?

    slip rating resistance banner image

One of the best parts about tiles is their variety. There are so many options when it comes to the colours, types and patterns of tiles.

Herringbone is a tile pattern that has been popular for a long time due to its artistic and unique visual appeal. These tiles are loved for their ability to create visual interest and movement in any space.

    Introduction to Herringbone Tiles

Herringbone tiles are thin rectangular tiles that form a zig-zag pattern. The pattern that the herringbone creates looks very much like the skeleton of a herring fish. An amazing fact about this tile pattern is that it can make a space appear larger.

    Benefits of Herringbone Tiles

Herringbones provide benefits both in terms of practicality and appearance. Let’s go through some of the major perks that the tiles offer.

    Aesthetically Pleasing

Herringbone tiles can create a classic visual charm with a lot of character. Their unique look can make any space stand out. Use these tiles if you want to create a timeless statement!

    Durable

These tiles are strong, sturdy and last for a long time. They are also scratch resistant.

    Provides Lots of Choices

There are lots of colours and materials that you can work with when it comes to herringbone tiles. This allows you to choose a tile that is just right for your space.

    Space Enhancement

If you want to create the illusion that you have more space or make a smaller area look more spacious, go for a herringbone pattern. The zig-zag pattern on these tiles is an amazing space enhancer.

    Easy Maintenance

Herringbone tiles, despite their unique style and pattern are relatively easy to maintain. They can be easily cleaned with simple brooming and mopping.

    Different Kinds of Herringbone Patterns

There are four major patterns when it comes to herringbone:

    90 degrees

If you love your tile to be arranged vertically, you can lay your herringbones at a 90 degree angle.

    45 degrees

Laying the tiles at this angle gives you a wavy zig zag look that goes from left to right.

    Diagonal

Go for this if you love the 45 degree angle with a bolder visual appeal.

    Double Herringbone

In case anyone wants to go a notch further and make their herringbone pattern even more unique, you can consider doubling up the tiles.

    Maintaining Herringbone Tiles

Herringbone tiles are quite easy to maintain. But you will need to take care of them now and then to make sure they look as stunning as when you first installed them.

Here are a few tips to take care of your herringbone tiles:

    • Clean regularly with a soft bristle brush.

    • Don’t leave your stains and spills unattended. Wipe them off as promptly as possible.

    • Use floor protectors such as pads or rubber protectors under your furniture legs to avoid possible scratches.

    • For mopping, use warm water or mild detergent.

    • Avoid using harsh cleaners or bleach.

Australian Slip Rating Resistance for Tiles

    slip rating resistance banner image

In the process of selecting the right tile for your home, one important factor to look out for is slip resistance. This aspect becomes even more essential if you are choosing tiles for spaces like your bathroom, pool decks, kitchen, patios or any other area that is prone to moisture.

Tile Slip Rating: Meaning and Types

Tile Slip Rating is an assessment conducted to evaluate the slip resistance of tiles. In Australia, we have three types of tests.

    Pendulum Test

This test measures the level of friction between a wet tile and a standard shoe. The rating under this test starts at P0 and goes on till P5. P0 and P1 represent very low slip resistance. P2 represents low slip resistance. P3 represents medium slip resistance. P4 represents high slip resistance and P5 represents very high slip resistance. So, the degree of slip resistance increases as the number increases in this assessment.

    Oil Wet Ramp Test

In this test, lubricating oil is evenly applied to tiles and then the tiles are loaded onto a treadmill ramp. A tester walks on the ramp while on the harness as the pitch angle of the ramp is being adjusted continually. The angle acts as a basis to determine the degree of slip resistance. This assessment measures the slip resistance in values of R9 to R13. The higher the value, the higher the slip resistance and the lower the slip risk. This means R9 and R10 are the riskiest because they have lowest slip resistance. R13 on the other hand will be highest slip resistance and lowest risk.

    Barefoot Wet Ramp Test

In this test, tiles are laid on a ramp and sprayed with water continuously. Testers walk barefoot on the wet tiles once they have soaked their feet. The tiles are inclined to determine the unsafe angle. This evaluation rates tiles on the scale of A, B and C. A means low slip resistance and high slip risk, B rating signifies that tiles are moderately slip resistant and C refers to high slip resistance and low slip risk.

    Significance of Tile Slip Rating

Tile slip rating is a very beneficial test. Here are some of the primary reasons it can be helpful.

Helps customers select the right tiles

Living rooms are one place that has comparatively low chance of getting exposed to moisture. Walls are an area that people don’t walk on. On the other hand, kitchen floors, bathrooms, patios, pool decks and shower areas are places that can witness foot traffic and get wet regularly. Tile slip rating helps determine which tile should be used in which area.

Moderate slip resistant tiles can easily be used in living rooms. Walls can be tiled with low slip resistant tiles. Similarly, bathrooms and outdoor areas need to be tiled with highly slip resistant tiles. It is through tile slip ratings; we can use the right tiles in the right place.

    Promotes safety

Through the tile slip rating assessment, we have the information to select tiles that are suitable and safe for areas that can get wet. Installing slip resistant tiles in moisture prone areas will make sure we don’t meet any accidents due to the wrong selection of tiles.

    Compliance with regulations

Many buildings, commercial areas and offices need to comply with specific slip resistance requirements. This helps ensure the safety of visitors, employees and customers.

    Porch Tiles for Australian Homes:
    Complete Buying and Styling Guide

    porch tiles banner image

Porch tiles are an essential element of your outdoor space. They not only keep your exteriors protected from possible wear and tear but can also add beauty to your entrance. While we might think tiling an outdoor space might not need that much thought, it’s not the case. The right outdoor tile can transform the way your exteriors look and you need to be more careful about the kind of material you can use in an outdoor area.

    Best Porch Tiles Sydney

You must consider many aspects before choosing a tile for your porch. The best front porch tiles need to be both functional and aesthetic. After all, your outdoors is exposed to a lot of elements like rain, UV rays and harsh weather.

Here are some of the tiles that could be the most suitable for your porches.

    Porcelain Tiles

If you are looking for tiles that are strong, versatile and affordable, look no further than Porcelain tiles. These tiles are very durable and can withstand intense sunlight and heavy foot traffic without showing signs of wear and tear. Your Porcelains are practically waterproof making them ideal for outdoor areas like porches or even pool decks. The nonporous surface of porcelain tiles even resists bacteria, mould and mildew, contributing to a healthier living environment.

    Ceramic Tiles

Ceramic tiles are made from a mixture of clay, minerals and water that’s been shaped and fired at scorching temps. The result? A dense, durable and low-maintenance surface that’s perfect for porches.

But what makes ceramic tiles truly shine is their versatility. With a vast array of colours, patterns and textures to choose from, you can create a truly unique entrance. Plus, they’re a breeze to clean and resistant to moisture, stains and scratches – making them an ideal choice for high-traffic areas.

Many ceramic tiles are made from natural materials and can be recycled. Some manufacturers even use recycled content in their tiles. Additionally, ceramic tiles have a long lifespan, reducing the need for frequent replacements and thereby minimizing environmental impact.

    Terracotta Tiles

Terracotta tiles are made from natural clay and have a distinct reddish-brown, earthy colour. These tiles have a rustic, traditional look and feel to them.

Each tile has natural variations in colour and texture, giving your floors a one-of-a-kind, rustic and earthy aesthetic appeal that can add warmth and character to your porch. Known for their long-lasting nature, they can endure for decades with proper care and maintenance, resisting scratches, stains and wear and tear, making them suitable for high-traffic areas.

The best part is these tiles don’t require extensive cleaning or polishing and their natural variations can help hide dirt and wear over time, making them a low-maintenance flooring option for porches. The natural beauty and durability of these tiles can even increase the value of your home, as they are a desirable feature for many homebuyers.

    Limestone Tiles

Limestones have been well loved and appreciated by homeowners and interior designers for many reasons. They are strong and resilient tiles that are easy to clean and maintain.

Compared to most natural stones, Limestone tiles are relatively affordable. Limestones have antibacterial properties, making them ideal for outdoor areas.

    Travertine Tiles

Travertine tiles are a dream come true for anyone who loves simple and minimalistic luxury. These natural limestone tiles radiate timeless elegance and look great both indoors and outdoors.

When properly installed and maintained, these tiles can last for decades without losing any beauty or structural integrity. Please know that proper installation is one of the key factors that help the tiles’ durability.

These tiles are also a lot cheaper than many other natural stone tiles. And since they are durable too, travertine is financially beneficial both in terms of upfront cost and long-term value.

For Australian summers and the scorching Sydney sun, heat resistance is a non-negotiable quality. Especially if the tiles are being used outdoors. Thankfully, travertine is a good conductor of heat.

Travertine’s natural surface texture, combined with its porosity, provides excellent slip resistance, making it a safer choice for areas with high foot traffic or where moisture may be present, such as bathrooms or outdoor spaces.

    Sealing Outdoor Porch Tiles

Sealing your outdoor porch tiles is a good idea. You can preserve the appearance of your tiles and retain their durability by sealing them.

When you seal your tiles, you can also protect them much better from UV degradation, mould, fungus, bacteria, pests, chemicals and contaminants. It helps that sealed tiles are easier to clean too.

How to Select and Style Encaustic Tiles

Bringing back Victorian-era England might not be possible. But you can invite the architecture of that period into your home through Encaustic tiles. Intricate designs, timeless craft and unique patterns, the magic of these tiles is truly unparalleled.

These tiles were first introduced in the 1800s and have a history of over 150 years. Yet, even today, the tiles are considered strongly relevant and charming.

What separates encaustic look tiles from all the others is that these tiles are handmade. They are created through a method developed in the mid-19th century where the patterns’ colours come from mineral pigments mixed and poured into a mould. As opposed to most tiles, the patterns are inlaid into the body of the tile, and not painted or glazed on the top. This very quality makes the patterns of Encaustic tiles much more long-lasting.

Encaustic Tiles for Bathrooms, Kitchens and Outdoor Spaces

If you like medieval artistry and appreciate spaces with a lot of texture, drama and character, Encaustic tiles are the right choice for you.

These tiles can be used in various spaces, but are most popularly used in the following:

    Kitchens

These masterpieces are the most ideal for kitchen areas. You can use them to create a gorgeous floor, a dramatic accent wall, stunning backsplash or to make your island a head turner. Their resistance to scratches, stains and moisture also makes them a good tiling option for your kitchen area. In addition, most types of encaustic look tiles can complement the decor of kitchens easily.

    Bathrooms

Encaustic bathroom tiles can be used in bathroom floors, walls or even shower surrounds. You can take yourself and your guests to a different dimension and era by using these vintage tiles in your bathroom spaces.

    Outdoor Spaces

Gardens and patios are two other areas where the application of encaustic floor tiles just makes sense. The beauty of nature mixed with the old age patterns of these tiles can blend quite well together to make a statement.

    Different Finishes of Encaustic Tiles

There are a wide range of encaustics that are available in Australia. Here are the major types of finishes these tiles come in.

    Fully Vitrified Porcelain Encaustics

These are some of the most versatile, durable and expensive encaustic tiles in the market. These tiles also have low porosity, making them ideal for bathrooms and laundry. Their pattern however is screen printed onto the tile and can fade more easily when compared to other types of encaustics. The good part is their durability that makes them appropriate for high traffic areas such as pathways, verandahs, entrances or patios.

    Cement Encaustics

A popular type of encaustic tiles, Cement Encaustics or also known as Moroccan Cement Encaustics are quite affordable. They are, however, quite porous and not very suitable for areas that tend to get wet regularly. They also stain and chip easily and aren’t as durable.

    Glazed Porcelain Encaustics

These are the most popular types of encaustics and are available in a wide variety of options. They are also the most cost effective among the encaustic finishes, are versatile, easy to clean and quite tough.

How to Clean and Maintain Encaustic Tiles?

To make sure your tiles remain in good condition and look like new for a long time, please be mindful of the following:

    • Most of the stains on Encaustic tiles can be cleaned with fresh water, detergents or proprietary tile cleaners.

    • Stubborn marks on these tiles can be removed with the help of nylon scourers.

    • Most encaustic tiles are microporous, so they need to be sealed to prevent dirt from being trapped in the pores or when used outdoors.

    • Make sure you don’t get these tiles too wet for longer periods.

    • Consider sweeping or vacuuming regularly to keep these tiles in good condition.

    • Don’t use anything acidic or any form of oxidizing agent on the tiles
